Antalya in 3 Days: Strolling Through Kaleici and Beyond
Antalya isn't only beachfront all-inclusive resorts. The city's historic center — the Kaleici quarter — is one of the best-preserved old towns in the Mediterranean. Narrow streets, Roman walls, yachts in the ancient harbor, minarets above the rooftops — all within walking distance of the modern center.
Three days here is enough to take in every key spot at a relaxed pace: climb to the viewpoint above the harbor, drive out to the Duden waterfalls, and wander through the covered bazaars where locals still buy spices and olives.
Kaleici moves at a different rhythm from the tourist beaches. Local families still live here — you'll smell coffee and fresh bread, see laundry drying in courtyards, and find cats holding court at cafe entrances. This is the real Turkey, not the resort postcard.
Budget for 3 days: a boutique hotel in Kaleici runs $35-85 per night, food $10-18 per person daily, transport and excursions $6-12. Total $180-360 per person.
Day 1: Kaleici — the Old Town
Morning
Start at Hadrian's Gate — the ceremonial entrance to the old town, built in 130 AD to mark the visit of Emperor Hadrian. Three pristine marble arches — it makes an impression. Free entry, best light for photos in the morning.
From the gate head deeper into Kaleici: Ataturk Caddesi flows smoothly into the old lanes. First breakfast — at Vanilla Lounge (Hesapci Sokak) — pancakes, Turkish tea, fresh juices. A modest breakfast runs 150-200 lira.
Day
The main landmark is the Yivli Minaret Mosque, the symbol of Antalya. The 38-meter fluted minaret from the 13th century is visible from anywhere in the old town. Entry to the mosque grounds is free; inside only outside prayer times.
Walk down to the Old Harbor through the narrow streets — 15 minutes on foot. Yachts, awning-covered cafes, cats on the piers. Stroll along the water, take a yacht tour of the bay (2-3 hours, 500-800 lira).
Lunch at Vanilla Restaurant or Parlak Restaurant by the harbor — fresh fish, meze, pide with feta. 300-500 lira per person.
Evening
Sunset from the Kesik Minaret park viewpoint — a ruined minaret on the cliff edge with sea views. Then walk Kaleici's enclosed streets at dusk — they're especially beautiful after sunset.
Dinner: Restaurant Hisar right by the fortress walls — Turkish kebabs, hummus, tandoor flatbreads. A favorite among locals.
Day 2: Duden Waterfalls and Bazaars
Morning
Head to the Upper Duden Waterfall — 12 km from the city center, bus #8 from Ismet Pasha Square. A beautiful cascading waterfall in a park, entry 25 lira. Few people in the morning, good light for photos.
Next to the waterfall is a tea garden — perfect for a Turkish breakfast: simits (sesame bagels), white cheese, olives, tomatoes, tea — 80-100 lira.
Day
The Lower Duden falls straight into the sea from a 40-meter cliff. You can reach it on foot along the shore from the Lara district (3 km) or by taxi. The view from below is best from a boat tour (400-600 lira, about 1.5 hours).
Back in town — lunch at the Antalya Bazaar by Isparta Square. Look for places where locals eat — doner, sis kebab, pide. A filling lunch runs 150-200 lira.
After lunch — shopping at the Covered Bazaar (Kapali Carsi): spices, dried fruit, leather goods, Turkish sweets. Buy lokum by weight — around 80-120 lira per kilo, taste before buying.
Evening
Return to Kaleici at sunset — an evening walk through quarters you missed yesterday. We recommend stopping by the Antalya Museum before closing (entry 150 lira) — one of Turkey's best ancient museums with a hall of Lycian sarcophagi.
Dinner at Manda Ciftligi — a restaurant in an old mansion with a garden. Home-style Turkish cooking, wine, an unhurried atmosphere.
Day 3: Aspendos and Side
Morning
The final day — a day trip to the ancient ruins. Aspendos, 50 km from Antalya, is the best-preserved ancient theater in the world. It seated 15,000 spectators, built in the 2nd century AD. Still used for concerts today. Getting there: bus from the Otogar (Dogu Garaji) terminal to Serik, then a dolmus — 45-60 minutes. Entry around 15 euros.
Leave early: in the dry season it gets brutally hot by noon. Bring water and a hat.
Day
Next — Side, 5 km from Aspendos. An ancient port city with the Temple of Apollo right by the sea — one of the most photographed views in Turkey. Marble columns against the deep blue Mediterranean. Entry to the site around 10 euros.
Lunch in Side: the main street Liman Caddesi is full of restaurants with sea views. Try balik ekmek (fish in bread) — simple and good. 100-150 lira.
Evening
Back in Antalya by sunset. Final dinner in Kaleici: try Hasanaga Restaurant (Hesapci Sokak 15) — one of the oldest restaurants in the old town, running since the 1950s. Adana kebab, eggplant salad, ayran. Tested classics.
After dinner — a night walk through the illuminated harbor. The best reflections of the yachts in the water happen at night.
