Kaliningrad in Summer: Routes, Curonian Spit and Practical Tips
Kaliningrad is the one Russian city with a tangibly European atmosphere. The former Königsberg preserved German brick quarters, Gothic gates, forts and cathedrals - and all of it intertwines with a modern Russian city. Summer here is pleasant: 18-22C, green parks, fish market by the water and the Baltic Sea 40 minutes away by car.
June, July and August are the best window. Days are long (until 10 PM), the Curonian Spit is covered in pines and dunes, beaches at Svetlogorsk and Zelenogradsk run at full capacity. Amber is the main souvenir: it's washed up on the beaches of Baltiysk and Yantarny after storms.
Kaliningrad is a useful base for excursions: in a day you can drive across the entire Kaliningrad region - from the Lithuanian border at the Neman to the Polish border at Mamonovo. Prussia, amber and the Baltic - this is its own particular Russia.
Kaliningrad Weather in Summer
June: 16-20C, possible rains, sea warms to 14-16C. White nights here aren't as bright as in Saint Petersburg, but it also gets dark late - around 10:30 PM. July is the warmest month: 19-24C, sea 18-20C, swimming is possible. August is slightly cooler (17-22C) and windier, but with fewer tourists. Rain can happen in any summer month - the Baltic is unpredictable. Bring a light windbreaker.
Curonian Spit: What to Know
The Curonian Spit is a narrow strip of land 98 km long between the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon. Part is Russian (Kaliningrad region), part Lithuanian. It's a UNESCO site: unique dunes up to 68 meters high, ancient pine forests and an ornithological station where birds are ringed. In summer the spit is packed: leave before 9 AM or in the evening. National park entry - about $2 per person. Mandatory points: the dancing forest, Efa Dune, Rybachy village. A bicycle is the best transport.
City: What to See in Kaliningrad
The 14th-century Cathedral on Kant Island is the main attraction, with Immanuel Kant's grave inside. Fish Village is a tourist waterfront with German architecture (new construction but beautiful). The Central Market is a living city market with fish, amber, local specialties. The 12 Kaliningrad forts are Prussian fortifications from the 19th-20th centuries, open in summer; Fort 5 is the most visited. The World Ocean Museum is right by the water, with a real submarine and a museum ship.
Beaches and Sea
Zelenogradsk is the closest resort to Kaliningrad (45 km). A cozy town with German villas, cats (their signature thing) and a wide beach. Svetlogorsk is slightly further (46 km), more upscale, with wooden dachas and a lift to the sea. Baltiysk is the westernmost point of Russia, a military town with special entry rules but wide and empty beaches. Yantarny is a village with the largest amber quarry in the world; after storms you can find amber on the beach yourself.
Amber: Buy or Find
Amber is Kaliningrad's main souvenir. In shops: jewelry from $6 for simple pendants, raw stones from $2 per handful. The market by the Cathedral has many street sellers - haggle. The Yantarny amber plant in Yantarny village is the official producer, with a museum on site. Finding it yourself: after a storm (especially November-March, but also possible in summer) at the beaches of Baltiysk and Yantarny - you can realistically find several pieces. Amber is lighter than water and gets washed ashore by waves.
