Getting Around Istanbul: Transport Guide
Get an İstanbulkart on arrival — it works on metro, tram, bus, funicular and ferries, with each ride about ₺15–20. The tram and metro cover the main sights; ferries cross the Bosphorus cheaply. From the new airport (IST), the M11 metro or HAVAIST bus reach the center in 45–90 minutes.

İstanbulkart
Buy and top up at any station kiosk or machine. One card can pay for several passengers by tapping multiple times. It covers metro, tram, Marmaray, bus, funicular and public ferries — far cheaper than single tokens.
Metro and tram
The T1 tram links Sultanahmet, the Grand Bazaar and Kabataş; the M2 metro serves Taksim and Şişli. Marmaray crosses under the Bosphorus to the Asian side in minutes.
Ferries
Public ferries between Eminönü/Karaköy and Kadıköy/Üsküdar are scenic and cheap — the best way to cross to the Asian side and see the skyline.
Airport transfers
From IST: M11 metro to Gayrettepe then M2, or HAVAIST buses to Taksim/Sultanahmet (~₺130). From Sabiha Gökçen (SAW): HAVABUS to Taksim or the M4 metro.
Practical tips
- →Get the İstanbulkart at the airport on arrival.
- →Use ferries to cross the Bosphorus — cheaper and faster than taxis in traffic.
- →Avoid taxis at rush hour; the tram is faster in the old city.
- →Keep small balance on the card; refunds are awkward.
