Active Yerevan in 3 Days: From Canyons to Bike Rides
Yerevan isn't only museums and cafes. Around the city — dozens of kilometers of canyons, basalt cliffs, and ancient trails. In 3 days you can descend into the Azat gorge, walk along the rim of the Garni canyon, climb up to the Temple of the Sun, and bike around the center. The itinerary is built so each day you stay in motion without exhausting yourself. The main secret is to start early (before 8:00) to catch the cool in the gorges and arrive at viewpoints by lunch.

Day 1: Trek in the Azat Gorge and Geghard Monastery
Spend day 1 in the Azat River gorge: descent along the trail beside the water, climb to the Geghard Monastery, and lunch on a cliff overlooking the canyon.
Start the day at 7:30 at the bus station near the "Yeritasardakan" metro (1 Aram St.). Bus #266 to Garni village (40 min, 250 AMD). Get off at the "Garni" stop, then walk 500 m to the trailhead in the gorge. The trail starts at the bridge over the Azat River — descend along the left bank. About 1 km later you'll reach the basalt columns "Symphony of Stones" (entry 500 AMD, open 9:00-18:00). Continue along the river another 2 km to a fork: right — climb to Geghard Monastery (1.5 km up, 150 m elevation gain). The monastery is open 8:00-18:00, free entry. After the visit, descend back to the river and have a picnic on the flat stones by the water. Return along the same trail to the bus stop. The last bus to Yerevan leaves at 18:30. Important: bring 1.5-2 liters of water and a snack — there are no cafes in the gorge.
Day 2: Garni Canyon and Temple of the Sun
Dedicate day 2 to the Garni canyon: walk along the canyon rim, descend to the Temple of the Sun, and try climbing on the basalt columns.
Departure from Yerevan on the same bus #266 (7:30-8:00). Get off at the "Garni" stop and walk to the canyon through the village (15 min). Start of the route — viewpoint by the Church of St. Mary (2 Abovyan St.). From here the trail runs along the canyon rim south — 2 km to the Temple of the Sun (pagan temple of Mithra). The temple is open 9:00-17:00, entry 1,500 AMD. Nearby there are equipped climbing cliffs (height 10-20 m, gear rental at the "Armenia Climbing" club for 3,000 AMD/hour, book ahead by phone +374 55 55 55 55). After an active hour, descend into the canyon via stairs (100 steps) and walk 1 km along the bottom to the basalt columns. Bring lunch — only spring water is available in the canyon. Return to Yerevan by 17:00.
Day 3: Bike Ride Through the Center and Victory Park
On day 3 explore Yerevan by bike: ride along North Avenue, climb to Victory Park, and descend to the Cascade.
Rent a bike at "Yerevan Bike" (1 Amiryan St., 2,000 AMD/hour or 5,000 AMD/day, deposit 10,000 AMD). Start at Republic Square — ride along North Avenue (1.5 km, pedestrian zone — walk your bike) to Teryan Street. Then up Teryan Street to Victory Park (2 km, 5% grade). The park has bike paths — circle the lake (1 km). Then down Abovyan Street to the Cascade (1.5 km, careful — steep descent). At the Cascade you can leave your bike at the parking area and take the elevator (free) up to the top — Mount Ararat is visible from there. Then descend along the boulevard to the Hrazdan River embankment (2 km) and return to the start. Lunch — at "Karas" cafe (8 Pushkin St.) — khinkali portion 1,200 AMD.

What to Bring
For an active route you need comfortable shoes, trekking poles, 2 liters of water, a rain jacket, and a headlamp.
Shoes: sneakers with aggressive tread (dirt, rocks). Poles: ease the climb in the gorge (rent in Yerevan for 500 AMD/day). Water: minimum 2 liters per person per day (no water points in the canyons). Rain jacket: mountain weather changes in 10 minutes. Headlamp: if you stay in the gorge until dark. Also bring sunscreen and a cap — sun in the canyon is intense even in spring.
