Yerevan in Autumn: Wine Route, Weather, Where to Taste
Armenia is one of the world's oldest winemaking countries: vineyards here have been cultivated for over 6,000 years. Autumn is when this becomes physically tangible: in September-October the harvest moves through the entire country, the air smells of grapes, and every farmer has a bottle of homemade wine for a guest.
Yerevan in autumn means 22-25C in September, golden mountains around the capital and Ararat visible especially clearly in the transparent autumn air. October cools slightly to 15-18C, but this is exactly when Vanadzor and Areni hold their wine festivals, and the road through the gorges to Noravank and Khor Virap monasteries is covered in red and gold leaves.
Yerevan is a small city where everything is walkable: Northern Avenue, the Cascade with its gardens, Matenadaran. But above all it's the gateway to a country where in an hour's drive you find yourself among medieval monasteries and vineyards.
Yerevan Weather in Autumn
September is warm and sunny: 22-27C, cool nights (14-16C). October: 14-20C, leaves changing color, possible rains but short. November is autumn in the full sense: 6-10C, rain and first snow on the peaks. Ararat is particularly photogenic in autumn - visible from central Yerevan and from the Cascade on clear days. Mountain Garni and Geghard monastery are accessible all autumn, without summer dust and heat.
Wine Route from Yerevan
Areni is Armenia's main wine village, 120 km from Yerevan, through the Arpa gorge. They make Areni Noir here - an autochthonous variety that's 6,000 years old. Local farmers welcome guests for tastings right at home. Vayer Areni, Zorah Karmir, Areni 1 - local producers. 7 km from the village is Noravank monastery from the 13th century in red cliffs: a mandatory stop. The drive there and back is one of the country's most beautiful routes.
Grape Festivals and Holidays
The Grape Festival in Areni (October) is the main gastronomic event of autumn. Wine pressing by foot, tastings, folk dances, fairs. Similar festivals run in Ashtarak and Vayk. In Yerevan in September-October, restaurants launch special seasonal menus: lamb skewers, dolma in grape leaves, mshosh (lentil starter) and fresh young wine. The Gum market in central Yerevan in autumn is where you can buy everything from pomegranates to mulberry vodka (tuti arak).
What to See in Yerevan and Surroundings in Autumn
Khor Virap monastery at the foot of Ararat is one of Armenia's most photographed places. In autumn the vineyards by the monastery walls turn red. Garni is the only pagan temple of the 1st century in the post-Soviet space. Nearby is the Symphony of Stones gorge - 50-meter basalt columns. Geghard monastery (11th-13th centuries) is partly carved into rock - in autumn light it looks particularly mysterious. Dilijan is the Armenian Switzerland: a mountain town with forests, a Soviet-era sanatorium and Haghartsin monastery.
