Cappadocia for Two: 3 Days Among Rocks, Balloons, and Starry Skies
Cappadocia is hard to put into words. Millions of years of volcanic rock carved into "fairy chimneys," underground cities, and valleys with bizarre cliffs. Today it's one of the most romantic places in the world — no surprise people come here to propose, celebrate anniversaries, and simply fall in love again.
Three days here is a packed but not exhausting rhythm. Morning — sunrise with a balloon over the valley, day — walks through canyons and tastings of local wines, evening — dinner at a cave restaurant with candles. Everything is set up so you think of nothing but the person beside you.
Nearest airport — Kayseri (ASR), 1 hour to Göreme. You can also fly to Nevsehir (NAV), but fewer flights. Best time for a romantic trip: April-May and September-October — not hot, balloons fly regularly, fewer tourists. Nights are cool — bring a jacket even in summer.
Day 1: Arrival and First Sunsets Over the Valleys
Day one — a soft immersion in Cappadocia. Valleys, cave hotel, and wine at sunset.
Morning
Check into a cave hotel in Göreme — the main village of Cappadocia. We recommend hotels Museum Hotel or Kelebek Hotel: rooms carved straight into the rocks, with fireplaces and view terraces. Rates start at $150-300 per night, but that's part of the experience. Budget option — Shoestring Cave House.
Breakfast at the hotel is usually included — Turkish spread with menemen (eggs with tomatoes), cheeses, olives, fresh bread, and tea.
Day
Walk through the Pigeon Valley (Güvercinlik Vadisi) — 3 km on foot, free entry. The slopes are dotted with pigeon houses carved into the rocks — peasants collected bird droppings for centuries to fertilize vineyards. That's why Cappadocian wines are so rich.
Continue your walk into Love Valley — "fairy chimneys" with especially expressive shapes that gave the valley its romantic name. The sunset here is pink.
Lunch: restaurant Topdeck Cave Restaurant in Göreme — terrace on the cliff with a valley view. Try testi kebab — meat baked in a clay pot, which they break open at your table.
Evening
Dinner at restaurant Ziggy's (Göreme, Bezirhane St.) — candles, live music, Cappadocian wine from local grape varieties Emir and Narince. End the evening on the hotel terrace overlooking the starry night sky — light pollution is minimal, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye.
Day 2: Hot Air Balloon Flight and Devrent
The trip's central day. Morning balloon flight — Cappadocia's main romantic experience.
Morning
Wake-up at 4:30 — transfer from Royal Balloon or Turkiye Balloons will pick you up (both reliable, cost 180-250 euros per person). An hour-long flight over the valleys at dawn, when 100+ balloons in different colors fill the air at once — no photo can capture it. Landing, champagne, and a certificate.
Important: flights depend on weather, book ahead and confirm the night before. In May and October there are sometimes wind cancellations.
Breakfast after the flight — at a Göreme cafe or hotel. You'll be too excited to eat much.
Day
The Göreme Open Air Museum (entry around 20 euros) — a rock-monastic complex from the 9th-11th centuries with preserved frescoes. The Dark Church (Karanlik Kilise) requires a separate fee of about 6 euros, but it has the best frescoes. Spend 2-3 hours here.
After — the Devrent Valley, also known as Imagination Valley: rocks in bizarre shapes — "camel," "cat," "Napoleon," and others. A wonderful place for a photo shoot together.
Lunch: village of Çavusin — a ghost village with abandoned cave houses. At the cafe by the entrance they serve gözleme (thin flatbreads with cheese and spinach) and homemade ayran.
Evening
Cappadocian wine tasting at Kocabag Winery (Mustafapasa road, 10 km from Göreme). White wines from the Emir variety are fresh and mineral. Dinner there or back to Göreme at restaurant Seki Restaurant — set menu of local dishes with paired wines.
Day 3: Ürgüp, Underground City, and Farewell Sunset
Final day — other faces of Cappadocia: underground cities and cozy Ürgüp.
Morning
Derinkuyu Underground City — 30 km from Göreme, taxi $20-30. Eight underground floors where thousands of people hid in the Middle Ages. Tunnels, churches, stables, ventilation shafts — a whole world underground. Cool and a little claustrophobic — hold hands.
Entry around 15 euros, takes 1.5-2 hours. Bring a flashlight — it can be dark inside.
Breakfast: at the cafe by the Derinkuyu entrance or bring börek (cheese-stuffed pastry) from a Göreme bakery.
Day
The town of Ürgüp — more elegant and quieter than Göreme. Beautiful stone mansions, antique shops, cafes. Walk through the center, visit the Ürgüp Tower on the hill with panoramic views.
Lunch: restaurant Dimrit Cave Restaurant in Ürgüp — one of the region's best. Lamb in a tandoor, hand-formed kofte, kaymak (thick cream) with honey for dessert.
Evening
Farewell sunset — the viewpoint on the hill next to Uchisar Castle (Uchisar, 5 km from Göreme). The castle is a rock with rooms inside; climb to the top (entry about 5 euros) and watch the valleys turn orange and red. This is exactly the Cappadocia of postcards.
Airport transfer: book ahead, 1 hour to Kayseri. The airport is small, arrive 90 minutes before departure.
